The PCL Net will take May 27 off, 2 weeks from
tonight, for the Memorial Day Holiday. Hard to
believe that June will be here in just over 2
weeks. Hamvention in Xenia is this weekend, but
my travel/vacation days are basically over. I'm
wanting to save up for a trip to Shreveport in
June, 2025, for the 74th National Square Dance
Convention, but I'm going to have to cut down
on my spending to try to save some money...I
guess it'll be back to just 1 meal a day.
The storminess continues in the region. For the
second time in as many weeks, the Hot Springs
area got hit by an EF-2 tornado. Once again, no
injuries or deaths, but lots of damage. The
weather changes are causing severe pain, ruining
my sleep during the overnight hours, and making
it hard to move around during the day. I have
taken 6 Tylenol each of the last 3 days to try
to get some relief...I can't be doing that for
a long period of time, or I risk liver damage.
I'm to see the home health worker tomorrow, the
sleep study doctor on Wednesday, the eye doctor
on Friday, and the cardiologist next Wednesday.
I may have to set up an appointment with the
orthopedic doctor, as the left hip is bothering
me, six months after the surgery. I hope I don't
need more surgery...as it may put me back off of
the square dance floor again.
I'm afraid to use my CPAP due to intense lightning
around here from storms, but the severe sleep apnea
may be to blame for the diastolic congestive heart
failure. A battery operated CPAP is quite expensive,
but I have no idea where the old one is; not to
mention I don't want to lift anything heavy, after
umbilical hernia surgery awhile back. The eye doctor
is to see if the suspected glaucoma has progressed
(I still don't plan to drive a car ever again), and
the cardiologist visit is for a follow up from the
hospital trip late last month.
The grass is growing like mad for all the rain, but
I can't afford mowing more than once a month. I'll
be glad when the winter season returns, and the lawn
goes dormant. Fire danger isn't an issue here right
now, but the soggy ground is, especially after all
the rain we've had lately.
The aurora borealis was seen as far south as central
Florida, and HF was basically dead Friday into Sunday.
I didn't even bother to look outside, as I was too far
in the city to avoid light contamination.

GE all,
I will be at my local ham club meeting tonight, so I
am providing an early update this week. It has been
a mostly quiet week, just plugging along at work.
The expected rain never came on Saturday, so we had
a very nice, sunny weekend.
I took my laptop on a sortie down south to see what
other packet stations I might be able to reach from
the car that I cannot directly reach from home. It
is a bit of a packet radio desert here, except for
APRS. It turns out it is a bit of a drive before I
can reach any of the nodes south of home. Oh well.
At least I did get trained on the one major node
near me, so at least I am a position to fix it if
needed.

'Twas an uneventful week for ham radio activity.
Conditions haven't been too good due to the solar
storms so I haven't been able to make any of my
normal connections into Wisconsin - but this too
shall pass and things will get back to normal, I
hope.
Everybody's been seeing aurora's - they haven't been
visible here. I sorta feel ripped off. But, from the
pics I've been seeing, this event must've been a
doozy! As most of the aurora pics are purple-ish.
I was wondering about that as I'm used to seeing green -
I guess it has to do with how deep the activity gets
into our atmosphere and the different chemicals that
are affected. The article went on to say that pink and
yellow aurora's are the rarest...
Hope everyone had a good Mother's Day - we went out to
Joey's Italian restaurant in East Syracuse. Ate entirely
too much, but it was good!
I need to mow my yard but it's raining. And the forecast
says it's going to rain all week. I'll have a hayfield
when I finally get to it...
Was wondering if Rick is affected by the fires that are
starting to popup in Canada. I guess we'll hear when he's
back.
No field day for me. Got a college graduation to attend out
on Long Island. It's always somethin' around here...

Good week, still in Georgia visiting brother. Aurora
photos awesome from Branson and Joplin areas, but
missed it here. We're southwest of Atlanta, some aurora
in northern Georgia but not seen from this nearby area.
Pre Field Day Springfield MO first week in June, should
be good one. Branson club only operating Field Day on
Saturday because permit from city not allow overnight
from location for this year. We will be in public location
so extra points for that.
Deal about Scott in Huntsville saving girl friend life
last week:
We stopped at hardware store where Scott worked for 25 years
(he retired about year ago). Girl friend left her purse there
and not missed it until we in Oklahoma 3 hours away. Called
Scott, and he contacted owner, had her purse waiting next
morning when we arrived there. Total mileage that day doubling
back then on to far southeast Oklahoma 658 miles to granddaughter
wedding. So Scott was big help with the situation
Not able to get in via Telnet lately so may be down
Have checked in to Boredom Breakers net few times. First hour
on nearby repeater and second hour via Echolink. Really
interesting just listening sometimes.

Hi all!
Not much on the radio front. Went to Ft Worth over Mother's Day
weekend to see our son and his kids. Like Bob (NY) I ate tooooo
much!
Have been continuing to tinker with the sat tracker I've talked
about several times. In the process of moving it over to an ESP32
system (M5Stack CoreS3), but several of the common libraries
(i.e. GPS and ethernet) had to be changed, and of course the calls
were different. Arrgh!
Anyhow, I've got it working pretty well, so now the next step is
to add some relays to control power to the servos. That should
enhance their lifetime, if they are powered off when not tracking
a satellite or weather balloon/radiosonde.
Sorry I didn't get to meet Charley at the Claremore hamfest last
month. I didn't decide to drive over there until the last minute.
Maybe next year.

He was a great guy and sorely missed by all in the Tulsa area.

Bob (NY), I can't afford to have my lawn mowed more than once
a month. I'll be glad when the grass quits growing so much. I
saw the deal on the Canada wildfires...I think Gary, VE6DZ, may
need to evacuate his area.
Charley, I thought the deal with Scott saving your girlfriends
life was EMS related...hope nothing was missing from her purse.
Hams can be great friends, but sometimes, with friends like us,
you don't need any enemies (hi hi). At least the club in Branson
can operate some during Field Day...I have no plans that weekend,
except my regular nets.
Bob (OK), I stayed home Sunday...my Mom passed away nearly 5
years ago now...I just did my nets, then crashed out. FB on
the satellite tracker.
I started checking into the Boredom Breakers Net on Echolink
via the N5QXK-R node. I heard of the net from KF5KHE. I added
the nets from the RCWA to the spreadsheets.
