Hello all Scouts,
Saint Georges Day, celebrated on April 23rd, holds a special place in the heart of the global Scouting movement. As Scouts, we honor Saint George, the patron saint of Scouting, for his legendary courage, honor, and commitment to doing what is rightqualities that echo the values we strive to live by. This essay, shared over radio packet systems, explores the history and significance of Saint Georges Day in Scouting, connecting Scouts worldwide through our shared ideals.
The story of Saint George dates back to the 3rd century, when he was a Roman soldier who, according to legend, slew a dragon to save a princess and her town. This tale of bravery and selflessness made Saint George a symbol of heroism across cultures, particularly in England, where he became the patron saint. His feast day, April 23rd, has been celebrated for centuries with festivals, parades, and acts of charity. For Scouts, Saint Georges example resonates deeply, as it reflects the Scout Promise to help others and uphold integrity, no matter the challenge.
In Scouting, Saint Georges Day was embraced early on by our founder, Robert Baden-Powell, who saw the saints story as a model for young people. Baden-Powell, inspired by chivalric ideals, chose Saint George to embody the spirit of service and perseverance that Scouting promotes. Since the movements beginnings in 1907, Scouts have marked April 23rdor the nearest Sundaywith ceremonies, parades, and community service. These events, often featuring flag-bearing and promise renewals, remind us to live by the Scout Law and to serve our communities with courage.
Saint Georges Day in Scouting is more than a tradition; its a global celebration of unity. From the United Kingdom to Brazil, Portugal to Spain, Scouts gather to honor shared values. In 2025, as we approach April 23rd, Scout troops may march in parades, attend outdoor services, or undertake projects that reflect Saint Georges legacy of helping others. These activities strengthen our bonds, whether were in a bustling city or a remote camp, and they inspire us to face our own “dragons”challenges like fear, doubt, or injusticewith determination.
